A five time winner of Car and Driver's 10 Best List since its debut in 2007, the 2012 Honda Fit continues to delight even the harshest of critics.

 

With a front engine, front wheel drive, SOHC 1.5 liter 16 valve incline-4, aluminum block and head engine, the car boosts 117 horsepower with 106 pound-feet of torque.

 

The lineup remains the same, with two trims: the Base Fit and Fit Sport. Transmission choices include a five-speed automatic - with manual mode and paddle shifters on the Sport - or a five-speed manual transmission, named one of 2011's best manual transmissions by Car and Driver.  In a test drive, the Fit Sport drove 0-60 in 8.3 seconds.

 

Engineers hoped to create a more silent riding experience inside the Fit. With the addition of new floor and window insulation, the 2012 model is designed to keep road noise out. The 2012 Honda Fit also has new interior lighting, cup holders, and wheel covers. While not much else has changed on the base model, the Sport has a reworked front grille, new cloth upholstery, chrome accents, and machine 16-inch wheels and new steering wheel audio controls.

 

Air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, a USB input, and an MP3-compatible CD sound system are included in both models. The Navigation system, which now includes Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and steaming audio, is only available as an add-on to the Sport model.

 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 2012 Honda Fit four out of five stars overall and four stars in front and side crash tests and rollover risk. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also named the Honda Fit a Top Safety Pick. With front 3-point seat belts with an automatic tensioning system, vehicle stability assist with traction control, driver's and front passenger active head restraint, advanced body engineering, ABS Braking technology and dual stage multiple threshold front airbags in conjunction with the front side airbags - there is little question as to why the car performs so well on all its safety tests.
