New Honda Engine Sure to Win the Race

Racing is one Honda's specialties and Honda has been the main provider of engines to the IndyCar racing since 2006. Honda was given exclusive creation privileges after two back to back seasons of winning the manufactures' championship. In the manufactures' competition is where select car makers are invited to create an engine to be tested and used in the IndyCar Series. Since 2006 Honda has supplied every team with the engine they would use in the series. In these six years the Honda engines have covered 1,188,366 miles and been driven by 98 drivers. Over that time the engines have had an astoundingly low number of only six in-race failures. In 2008, 2010 and 2011 no race failures were reported at all.

It is because of this that the Race Engine Technology magazine written and printed in Britain recognized the Honda Indy V8 engine as the 2011 "North America Race Engine of the Year." The magazine sites the engines performance and reliability during the time when Honda was the engine supplier for the IZOD IndyCar Series.

In 2012 Honda will be competing again in the manufacturer competition against Chevrolet and Lotus. Each competing engine will be a turbocharged V6 tweaked to meet the specific requirements. Honda plans on using a new engine called the HI12R that includes the following features:

  • direct/indirect fuel injection
  • Borg-Warner turbocharger
  • "Drive-by-wire" throttle technology
  • McLaren Electronics Engine Control Unit (ECU)

The engine will be premiering and can all be seen at the Honda Grand Prix on March 25 in St. Petersburg, FL. Honda is excited about the opportunity to prove, once again, that Honda is a force to be reckoned with in the racing world.
